The small, quiet community of Dunnottar (permanent resident population under 1,000) can be found on the southwestern shore of Lake Winnipeg, an hour’s drive north of Manitoba’s capital city. Alongside the requisite lakeside offerings of white sand beaches and outdoor activities, the village is most known for its piers. They are meticulously hand-built every spring, out from the shore — each plank and set of rails one at a time — using local poplar wood.
