Buffalo Point is about a two-hour drive southeast of Winnipeg. It’s in the southeastern corner of Manitoba, on the shores of Lake of the Woods. The fishing here is fantastic, but this serene locale also offers excellent birdwatching, golf, swimming, camping and cabin rentals. You could drive there and back in a day, or choose to camp or rent a cabin. Here are some fun things to see and do along the way.

  1. St. Norbert Farmers' Market (@stnorbertfarmersmarket) is about 20 minutes south of Winnipeg. Try a taste of rural Manitoba. Stop to pick up road-tripping snacks and browse the arts and crafts of local artisans. Open Wednesdays and Sundays.

  1. The Dawson Trail Museum chronicles a pivotal era in Manitoba history, telling the story of the vital transportation link connecting east and west. Just follow the Trans-Canada Highway for about 30 minutes to the museum, which is housed in a beautifully preserved former church.

  1. The Mennonite Heritage Village, in the town of Steinbach — about 30 minutes from the museum — is a step back in time. Learn about Mennonite history and culture by exploring homes, a church and a school. It’s an insightful peek into a unique way of life. CAA Members can save on general admission tickets.

The route to Buffalo Point along Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 12 passes through rural landscapes, farmland and small towns. It’s about an hour and a half without stops. Once you arrive in Buffalo Point, be sure to check out the Cultural Centre to learn about the Anishinaabe and Ojibway peoples through artifacts, architecture and interactive displays.
