Setting out from Toronto, your ultimate goal is the Elora Gorge Conservation Area, a gorgeous 13-hectare park in the Grand River Valley. It’s about a one-hour-and-45-minute drive straight through, but you’ll want to stop along the way and enjoy the journey.
Stop 1) The Aberfoyle Antique Market — Canada’s oldest outdoor antique market — is about an hour from downtown Toronto. The market has operated for more than 60 years, every Sunday, with more than 100 dealers of art, collectibles, furniture and more. On select Saturdays, the market expands with another 90-plus dealers. Plan to be here for a while.
Stop 2) Just 10 minutes away in nearby Puslinch, the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada is a not-for-profit licensed charity that provides shelter for donkeys, mules and hinnies. Visitors can get up close with more than 100 residents and learn about these unique animals. As they like to say, “These aren’t just horses with long ears!” Be sure to book tickets or a tour in advance on their website.
Stop 3) Pass through Guelph and drive about 30 minutes north to Fergus for some spectacular fishing — smallmouth bass, brown trout, steelhead, muskie, carp, pike and mooneyes — they’re all here and waiting for you. (Remember: people between the ages of 18 and 65 require a fishing licence.) Consider hiring a local guide who can make sure you are properly outfitted. There are several located right in the town of Fergus.
YOU’VE ARRIVED: Drive just 10 minutes from Fergus, and you’ll arrive at the Elora Gorge Conservation Area! There’s lots to do and see here. Take one of five hiking trails and discover the park’s features, including sheer limestone cliffs that rise 22 metres above the Grand River. If you want to get wet, tubing equipment is available for rent.
