Heading out into the great outdoors this summer? The last thing you want is health issues to get in the way of your plans. Here are four ways CAA Members and their loved ones can have safe, fun outdoor adventures.

  1. Swim with a swimming buddy. Children should always be supervised by an adult around the water, but older kids and adults should also never swim alone. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert swimmer, you never know what can happen when you’re in the water, so always swim in pairs. And, if possible, swim where a lifeguard can see you.

  2. Load up on bug spray. While rare, mosquitos can carry West Nile Virus. Wear loose-fitted nylon or polyester clothing and use bug spray with DEET in it. Just remember to check the label before spraying, as not all products are safe for children.

  3. Watch out for ticks. Ticks can carry Lyme disease, a potentially severe infection. Stick to clear paths or walkways, wear long sleeves, tuck your pants into your socks and load up on bug spray.

  4. Prevent food poisoning. Bacteria grows quicker in heat, so if you’re going to be outside all day for a family picnic, keep your food in a cooler bag with plenty of ice packs. And, if your food changes colour or texture or develops a new smell, it’s time to toss it out.

If you or your loved ones have any medical concerns this summer, like bug bites, food poisoning, rashes, or more, help is just a few taps away. You can skip the walk-in clinic and see a Canadian-licensed health care provider on Maple in minutes, anytime, anywhere.

With your CAA Membership, you and your family have 24/7 access to Maple for health advice, prescriptions and more. Register for your Maple benefit today so it’ll be ready when you need it.
