Whether you’re taking the family on a getaway to cottage country or road tripping to explore another province in Canada, it’s wise to get travel insurance to help protect your vacation investment.

CAA Travel Insurance1was one of the first companies in Canada to provide coverage for shared accommodations. We added it to our Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage to include bookings made through alternative lodging platforms like Airbnb, VRBO Family Companies, TripAdvisor rentals, priceline.com, booking.com and Expedia Vacation home rentals.

What is shared accommodations or alternative lodging?

Alternative lodging platforms or shared accommodations virtually connects hosts wanting to rent their home to consumers looking for alternative accommodations instead of staying at a hotel. Through an online shared lodging service such as Airbnb, VRBO and Trip Advisor, hosts can offer up their whole house or just a room for rent on a short or long-term basis. Any user of a shared accommodations service needs to do their part to cover themselves and their vacation investment.

With the number of shared accommodations rentals popping up and each following different rules, it is important to read and get familiar with the terms of your rental contract.
